I've received e-mails from folks who feel compelled to give up their animals because their homeowner's insurance policies don't cover the dogs. Unlike 10 years ago, there are many companies that do cover pit bulls, rottweilers, doberman pinschers and other previously-excluded breeds. Here's a short and (nonexclusive) list of insurance companies that will cover your dog here in Washington:
1. Pemco. My coverage is through Pemco.
2. Allstate Insurance.
3. State Farm.
Also, folks, if you are renting and do not own a home, this is no excuse to not have coverage. Every renter should have a renter's insurance policy including a liability policy that covers any injuries (including but not limited to dog bites/injuries) that may occur on their property. These policies usually cost under $15 a month for decent coverage and, because most insurance companies include "multiple policy discounts" for also having auto or boat or motorcycle or whatever insurance, you may actually ending up paying a monthly amount that is less than you were paying without renter's insurance-- crazy right? Crazy but true.
Having a renter's insurance policy is a good card to have in your deck when you're trying to find a home to rent with your dog. It shows your landlord you are proactive and accountable.
